We are so sorry to hear of Leon's passing, but so happy to have known him over many years. We will always remember him having children stand on the "green tile" at Edgewood Elementary. Our thoughts and prayers are with each of you.

What a wonderful man Mr. Butterfield was and such inspiration to all the children's lives that he touched. I only attended Edgewood for half of 5th grade and all of 6th grade but I learned what a caring man he was. My brother and sister then attended K-6; then our kids came along and had them too. My son Shayne Filby was an "active" child, but as an adult he finally came clean about visits to Mr. Butterfield's office..."lean over, get your hands in front and take it like a man". Shayne said he was always fair and to this day, thought of him kindly.
Prayers go out to the family.

To the family of Leon Butterfield.
I want to express my condolences for the loss of your husband and father.
How proud you must be for the man that touched so many lives in such a positive way. My brother and sister and myself walked back and forth to school with him everyday. At least tried. We would end up running. He become a father figure when we desperately needed one, and he became our hero.
In later years when he was taking day bus trips to KC they would stop for a break in Iola, RSC store, I recognized him immediately. I rush up to talk to him and said, I bet you don't remember me do You? "Of course, you lived on Poplar , you have a younger brother and sister". I was amazed, it was about 60 yrs ago.
He will be remembered by our family as a God sent Hero, when we needed one desperately.
God bless Mr Butterfield and his family.
