Obituary of Alvin Lee Smith
Alvin Lee Smith, 91, of rural Independence passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at his home.
He was born on September 28, 1926 at Liberty, KS to Carl and Stella (Childress) Smith. Alvin grew up in the Liberty and Coffeyville area where he attended rural schools.
He married Iva Mae Shelley. Following their marriage they lived in the Independence area where Alvin was employed with Automotive Control Corp. in the early 1950's he was transferred to Ohio where they lived and raised their two children. In the 1980's they returned to rural Independence. His wife preceded him in death.
In 2006 he married Betty Bailey. Following their marriage they made their home in rural Independence.
Alvin was a member of Southview Church of God in South Coffeyville, OK. He enjoyed doing carpentry work and was a skilled builder.
Survivors include his wife Betty Smith of the home; one daughter, Janet Tischler and husband Bob of Harlingen, TX; two step-daughters, Christy Gray and husband, Raymond Lester III of Caney, and Sonya Twitchell and husband, Louis of Tyro; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Iva Mae; one son, Robert Smith, one infant daughter, three sisters, Louise Pitts, Mildred Park, and Elsie Osborn; and one brother, Edwin Smith.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Southview Church of God in South Coffeyville, OK with Pastor David Metz officiating. Burial will follow in the Jefferson Cemetery northwest of Coffeyville.
Friends may call on Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
