Obituary of Jean Leadove Smith

Jean Leadove Brewer-Smith passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at CRMC in Coffeyville, Kansas. Jean was born on June 3, 1921 to Robert R. Brewer and Mary Jane Roberts in Montgomery County southwest of Dearing, Kansas. Jean attended school in Dearing, Kansas and went to High School at Field Kindley Memorial High School in Coffeyville, Kansas. She attended and graduated from Coffeyville Junior College and from Pittsburg State College in Pittsburg, Kansas. Jean taught school for 38 years in Montgomery County. She taught at Dearing School, Robbins School and 28 years at Garfield School in Coffeyville. She was a past member and officer of the Coffeyville Teachers Association and NEA. She was a member and first president of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority-Teachers for over 50 years. Some of her precious memories were the children she taught. She served as teacher, officer and directed Bible School for 11 years at Dearing Christian Church where she was a member for 86 years. Served as the organist for Dearing Christian Church for 20 years and served as organist for Caney Church. On July 19, 1944 she was united in marriage to Murrel Smith at her parents' home. Murrel preceded her in death on December 3, 2003. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Jane Brewer; son, Roger D. Smith in 2009; brothers, John and Robert Brewer; sister, Julia Brewer. Jean is survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the Dearing Christian Church. Pastor Jamie Regis will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville, Kansas. The family suggests memorials can be made to the Dearing Christian Church; contributions can be left with or mailed in care of David W.
