Obituary of Shirley L Straub-Allen

Shirley L. Straub Allen, 95, of Coffeyville passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Asbury Village. She was born on August 16, 1923 at Liberty, Kansas to William E. and Florence G. (King) Keeton. Shirley grew up and attended school in Coffeyville, graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1940. After graduating from high school she attended Coffeyville Beauty School graduating in 1941. In 1945 she married Dean Straub at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Following their marriage they lived in Phoenix, Arizona for four months before returning to Coffeyville. Dean preceded her in death in 1974. In 1976 she married Herman L. Allen at Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Coffeyville. Herman preceded her in death in 2011. Shirley worked at Kel-Mur, Vanity Box, and Nu-Art Beauty Shops until 1960 when she opened Shirley's Beauty Shop at 314 North Union St. which she operated until retiring in 1995. She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Coffeyville, serving as a Deaconess for two three year terms, Deacon for several three year terms, past Chairman of Christian Women's Fellowship and served on several committee's through the years. She also played in the first Bell Choir at the church. Shirley was a volunteer tutor at Whittier and McKinley Schools. She was a Pink Lady at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, delivered Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Genesis. Shirley enjoyed dancing, reading, painting, camping, fishing, crocheting, cooking, and yard work, and always enjoyed visiting with her customers in the Beauty Shop. Survivors include one step-son, Rusty Allen and wife, Kim of Towanda, Kansas, one step-daughter, Sue Houser and husband, Woody of Derby, Kansas; four grandchildren, Cara Dennison and husband, Craig of Benton, Kansas, Darci Smith and husband, Cody of Benton, Kansas, Larry Baker and wife, Ashlynn of Derby, Kansas, and Darla Hoffpauir and husband, John of Houston, Texas; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 8, 2019 in Fairview Cemetery with Chaplain Keith Springer of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University, or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
