Obituary of James W. "Benny" Benjamin

James Wayne "Benny" Benjamin, 74, of Tyro, KS passed away Monday, May 20, 2019 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born on September 22, 1944 at Independence, KS to Hughy and Pearl (Gordon) Benjamin. Benny grew up and attended grade school in Tyro and graduated from Caney High School as Valedictorian of his class. While in high school Benny was a member of the track team. After graduating he attended Coffeyville Community College. In September 1985 he married Anna Mae Hill. Following their marriage they made their home in Tyro. Benny was employed as a machinist at Funk Mfg. Co. now John Deere Coffeyville Works for 39 years. When he was younger he worked at Electra and managed a Phillips 66 Service Station in Kansas City. After his retirement he enjoyed fishing with his wife, his family and friends at Card Creek, Copan Lake and Elk City Lake. Benny was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan, he also enjoyed doing the cooking for the family Christmas Eve get together. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae of the home; four daughters, Tracie Eskew and husband, Melvin, Stacie Hough and husband, Rob, Billie Henderson and Steve, and Misty Sunday; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Roger Sunday, and two sisters. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2019 at the South Coffeyville United Methodist Church with Pastor Furan Jackson officiating. Friends may call on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the Tyro Volunteer Fire Department; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
