Obituary of Glenna K Barrett
Glenna K. Barrett, 88, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on May 19, 2019 at Cherryvale Nursing and Rehab Center.
Glenna was born on February 12, 1931 to Kenneth and Wanda Coleman. After their divorce she was raised by her mom and Arthur “Wayne” Lewman.
Glenna attended Whittier Grade School, Roosevelt Jr. High and Field Kindley High School. In high school she wrote two plays that were presented and also had several short stories published. Her high school summer job was at the local swimming pool where she was credited and awarded for saving a young drowning boy. After high school she was an operator for Bell Telephone Company. It was then she met long-life husband to be. On May 25, 1951 she and Tom Barrett were married in Mountain View, Arkansas. She then traveled and lived in many mid-western states following Tom’s line of work.
They returned to Coffeyville with their first son in 1956 and basically remained in Coffeyville for the rest of their lives. After Tom’s passing, she employed as an operator for CRMC. She retired from Family Dollar Store.
She was an avid bowler, including winning the city championship. She enjoyed board and card games as well as putting together puzzles and working crosswords. Also as a lifelong V.F.W. Post 1022 Auxiliary member she enjoyed the company of her friends there. She never missed her sons’ sports events. From youth through college, in town or away, she was there. After they became adults she got to watch her grandson and great grandchildren in all their activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne and Wanda Lewman; sister, Dona and niece Susan Couch all from Fairfield, Illinois; her husband, Tom Barrett; son, Steve and grandson, Chris.
She is survived by her son, Ron (Barbara) Barrett; great grandchildren, Nathan and Nichole Barrett, their mom Carita Wilson, a nephew Jim (Terri) Barrett, all of Coffeyville, niece Delores Adams of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and a nephew John (Becky) Couch of Fairfield, Illinois.
At Glenna’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Post #1022 and can be left at the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Rd., Coffeyville, KS 67337.
