Obituary of Helen Lorene Smith
Helen Lorene Smith, 99, of Caney formerly of Sedan passed away Monday, October 7, 2019 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
She was born on May 14, 1920 at Kingman, Kansas to Charles Leslie and Nola Pearl (Osborn) Locke. Helen grew up in the Belmont area where she attended school graduating from Belmont High School in 1937.
She married William A. “Bill” Smith on September 7, 1941 at Wichita, Kansas. Following their marriage they made their home in Kingman, Kansas, Liberal, Kansas, and Wichita, Kansas until the summer of 1956 when they moved to Sedan. For over 22 years Bill and Helen owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Sedan. Her husband preceded her in death on December 7, 1977. After her husband’s death Helen continued to live in Sedan until moving to Caney in 1985.
Helen was a devoted Christian all of her life, she belonged to the First Christian Church in Sedan and became an active member in the Church of Christ after moving to Caney. She enjoyed word search and jigsaw puzzles, domino’s card games and gardening, but her greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Rita Carinder of Caney; one daughter-in-law, Galina Smith of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; three granddaughters, Krista Wade, Jamie Capps Short, and Stephanie Muzingo; great-grandchildren, Alyssia, Heath, Trent, Paige , Logan, and Donovon; and great-great-grandchildren, Braxton and Saylor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, James R. Smith; one grandson, Shawn Riley; one great-granddaughter, Rowan Garver; three brothers, Howard Locke, Pete Locke, and Guy Locke; and one sister, Marie Rhodes.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, October 12, 2019 in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.
Friends may call on Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Coffeyville or Maude Carpenter Place Children’s Home in Wichita; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
