Obituary of George Allen Mehl, Sr.

George Allen Mehl, Sr., 83, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2019 at Medicalodges in Coffeyville.
George was born on February 4, 1936 in Wann, Oklahoma to Amos and Jessie Mae (Johnson) Mehl. In 1941 the family moved to Coffeyville and in 1946 they moved to a farm northwest of Dearing.
Mr. Mehl attended Coffeyville and Dearing schools graduating in 1954 from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville. While in high school, Mr. Mehl was active in FFA, serving as President of his chapter.
In 1957 he married Ruth Weathers at the Pentecostal Church in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma. Following their marriage they lived in South Coffeyville except for a three-month period while Mr. Mehl was employed at Cessna in Wichita, Kansas. In 1962 they moved to the family farm northwest of Dearing.
Mr. Mehl worked for Continental Can and Parkersburg before going to work for Funks in 1961. He returned to Parkersburg for a while, then later rejoined Funks in 1963 (John Deere Coffeyville Works) from which he retired in 1993 after thirty years of service.
In 2006 Mr. Mehl was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In 2008 he suffered a stroke which paralyzed his left side, limiting his outside activities.
He was an avid race car fan – attending local and area stock car races in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. He also enjoyed attending the Coffeyville Red Ravens football and basketball games, seldom missing a home game.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mehl of the home; two daughters, Kathy Fogle of Gillette, Wyoming and Anita O'Brien and husband, Troy of Olathe, Kansas; two sons, George JR Mehl and wife, Dr. Elena Mehl of Houston, Texas and Roger Mehl of Kansas City, Missouri; twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Martha Moody and a brother, John Mehl.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of David W Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, Kansas.
Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Veteran's Patio at Fairview Cemetery. Pastor Jeannie Harrington will officiate.
The family suggests memorials can be made to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson's Research; contributions can be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W Barnes Funeral Home 306 N Cline Rd
