Obituary of Paul Joseph Jacobs

Sedan - Paul Joseph Jacobs, age 83, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan. He was born October 11, 1923 in Topeka, Kansas to Joseph A. and Katherine (Werbach) Jacobs. He attended St. Anthony's Grade School and graduated from East High School in Wichita, Kansas. He later attended Wichita State University. He married Mabel Jean Sloan on February 6, 1946 in Wichita, Kansas. In 1978, they moved to Sedan, where they lived until his death. From 1978 until 1993, he was a Camp Ranger at the Quivera Scout Ranch for sixteen years until he retired in 1993. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sedan, the First United Methodist Church Men's Club, the Sedan Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America, the Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame, National Baseball Congress and Kansas Lodge 198, Order of the Arrow. He also helped establish the first co-ed Scouts in Wichita. He enjoyed woodworking, hiking, teaching, helping with Boy Scout and sports, especially baseball. He is survived by his wife Jean of the home in Sedan; three sons, Gregory Jacobs and his wife Mary Jo of Republic, Missouri, Brian and Linda Jacobs of Santa Rosa, California, Theodore and Carole Jacobs of Wichita, Kansas, three daughters, Jeanine Stateler of California, Cindi Jacobs-Murrill and John Burghart of Topeka, Kansas, Janell and Dennis Rogers of Centuria, Wisconsin; one honorary son and daughter, Mike and Mary Rogers; three brothers, Richard Jacobs and Don Jacobs, both of Wichita, Kansas and Joe Jacobs of Paoli, Oklahoma; two sisters, Pat Hommertzheim of Wichita, Kansas and Mary Jane Schuller of Prince George, Virginia; fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and one sister. Family and friends may sign the register book from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday and Friday, April 5, and 6, 2007 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday April 7, 2007 for public viewing with the family receiving friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes funeral Home in Sedan. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 9, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Jerry Bever officiating. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date in Wichita, Kansas. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Paul Jacobs Memorial Fund and these remembrances may be left with the funeral home.
