Obituary of Joyce L. Banta

Joyce L. Banta, 83, of Coffeyville passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020 at Generations Home Plus in Arkansas City, Kansas. She was born on August 11, 1936 in Coffeyville to Shelley K. and Julia M. (Knisley) Smith. Joyce grew up in rural South Coffeyville, Oklahoma where she attended Snow Creek School and graduated from Lenapah High School in Lenapah, Oklahoma. On January 1, 1961 she married Michael A. Banta at South Coffeyville, Oklahoma. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where they raised their sons, Michael and Mark. The Banta’ owned and operated Coffeyville Mill Supply for many years until their retirement. Joyce was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville. She was also a member of Tri M Sunday School Class. Joyce enjoyed working in the yard growing flowers and spending time with her family. Survivors include her husband, Michael A. Banta of the home; two sons, Michael S. Banta of Coffeyville and Mark A. Banta of Centerburg, Ohio; five grandchildren, Jacob Banta, Ellen Banta, Olivia Banta, Andrew Banta and Madeline Grace Banta; nephews, Bob Maggard, Ronnie Maggard, Dean Maggard, Darrell Maggard, Jerold Smith, and George Smith; and nieces, Patsy Brooks and Shelley Maggard. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Shelley William Smith and Anzel Eugene Smith; and two sisters, Peggy Lorene Lundberg and Julia May Smith. A Memorial Service celebrating Joyce’s life will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville with Pastor Nicole Schwartz-Eck officiating. Friends may sign the register book on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
