James Z. Maritt, Jr., 97, of Coffeyville passed away Monday, May 4, 2020 at his home. He was born on April 7, 1923 at Bartlesville, Oklahoma to James Z. Sr. and Opal Ruth (Pool) Maritt. When he was young his family moved to the Coffeyville area where he grew up and attended rural schools and graduated from Field Kindley High School. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army from February 1943 until receiving his honorable discharge in November 1945. During his service he served in the Rhineland and Central Europe, earning the Bronze Star. On April 18, 1946 he married Virginia Lester at the United Brethren Church in Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where Mr. Maritt was employed Co-op Refinery, Page Milk Co., and Junge Baking Co., he then became the auto body instructor at SEK Vo-Tech in Coffeyville. Through the years the Maritt's operated Maritt Vending and Marine Co. and Maritt Car Wash in Coffeyville. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and was a founding member of PINCH. Mr. Maritt served on the U.S.D. #445 School Board for 12 years. He enjoyed doing a good days work continuing to push mow his lawn becaue it looked better than mowing with the riding mower. He also loved spending time with his family. Survivors include his loving wife of 74 years, Virginia Maritt of the home; three daughters, Mary Lou Maritt, Ruth Ann Landrith and husband, Marc, and Elizabeth Jane Brummer and husband, Bruce; one son, James Richard Maritt and partner Matul Patel; two brothers, Orlin M. Maritt and Dean Maritt and wife, Pat; one sister, Freda Hulet; three grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Robert Maritt and Dan Maritt; and one sister Helen Feeley Private Services will be at the Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor Cummings officiating. Private family burial will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call on Thursday, May 7th from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville The family suggests memorials to Trinity United Methodist Church or the Veterans Memorial Patio at Fairview Cemetery; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
