Opal Louise Thompson, 85, of Coffeyville passed away Sunday (March 18, 2007) at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
She was born June 23, 1921 at Ketchum, Oklahoma, the oldest of 18 children born to Jefferson D. and Tabithia (Martin) Hardrick. She moved with her family to Nowata County and attended Post Oak Flat Public School.
Opal taught school in Oklahoma in the literacy program for the Cherokee Indians
In the Spring of 1947 she married Samson Thompson at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville. Mr Thompson preceded her in death in 1979.
She was an active member of Abundant Life Temple, and St. James United Methodist Church where she was a member for many years, and Order of Eastern Star. Opal was involved in the community work at the Senior Citizens Center, Pioneer Chapter of American Red Cross, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, was a officer and board member of the former Micro Midget Association, Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, former Officer of the Coffeyville NAACP, and was secretary and treasurer of VOTAW Colony Association.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Sampson and Barbara Thompson of Brunswick, GA; three brothers, Cecil Hardrick of Coffeyville, Charles Hardrick of Oklahoma City, OK, and Willard Hardrick of Akron, OH; four sisters, Verna Thompson of Fayetteville, AR, Ethel Colbert of Coffeyville, Jewel Anderson of Burlington, KS, and Gwendolyn Meigs of Denver, CO; six grandchildren, Wayne Burnam, Scott Burnam, Tyler Thompson, Amber Thompson, Brandy Thompson and Neiksha Thompson; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (March 24, 2007) at the First Church of God in Christ (1st and Union) in Coffeyville. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park.
Friends may call on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville
