Obituary of Bessie M Scofield
Please share a memory of Bessie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Bessie M. Scofield went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 21, 2020.
Bessie was born August 8, 1935 to Warren and Roberta (Bixby) Scofield in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Shortly after her birth, the family moved back to Independence, Kansas until 1944 when they moved to Coffeyville, Kansas. Bessie attended one year of school at Garfield and the rest of grade school was at Lowell School. She graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1953.
Bessie attended Southwestern Assembly of God Bible College in Texas. Upon her return from Texas, she was asked to run for the District Court Clerk office in the Montgomery County Court system. She held that office for several decades and retired in 2005. During the years, Bessie and her sister, Peggy participated in Biking across Kanas and the Oklahoma Freewheel. Bessie enjoyed working in the court system, but her heart was working in the church and teaching others about her Lord and Savior.
The Scofield family made Assembly of God, Independence, then First Assembly of God, Coffeyville, their home church. Bessie encouraged others to use their musical talents for the Lord. She taught music in the Sunday School classes teaching several generations of children. She was active in the young people group called Christ's Ambassador. She became the director for the church choir and directed many Holiday cantatas and dramas during her years of service for the Lord. She shared her musical talents by playing the organ at many church functions such as weekly church worship services, weddings and funerals. Bessie did not limit her ministry to the local church. She has sponsored many children in Latin America through the years and upon her retirement; she began working with Recordings for the Blind, which includes children and adult books.
Bessie is survived by her sister, Peggy Scofield, Coffeyville, brother and sister-in-law James (Amy) Scofield, South Carolina, and nephew Jason (Cherilynn) Scofield, and two great nieces, Mia and Sofia Scofield in South Carolina, Aunt Peggy (Bixby) Anderson of Crosby, North Dakota, and Aunt Dorothy Scofield of Kansas City, Missouri, and many cousins.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents Warren Washer and Ella (Barnard) Scofield, Robert Emerson and Rosa May (Chastain) Bixby, her parents, sister Madeline Virginia Hamacher, uncles Billie, Jack and Harry Bixby, Leonard Anderson and Donald Worth and Claire B. Scofield, aunts Wilma Adamson, Emily Blair and Eula Hughes.
Celebration Services for her home going will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at First Assembly of God Church with a private burial to be held at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. The wearing of masks and social distancing will be followed.
Memorials can be made to the First Assembly of God Church in Coffeyville, Kansas; these may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W Barnes Funeral Home 306 N Cline Rd Coffeyville, Kansas 67337.
