Obituary of Betty Ann Strom

Betty Ann (Kennedy) Strom, 99, of Coffeyville, passed away Jan. 8, 2021, at Windsor Place in Coffeyville, KS. She was born Dec. 23 1921, in Council Grove, KS to Percel Glen and Leona Mildred (Porter) Kennedy. She was a 1939 Graduate of Wilson High School, now Council Grove HS. She then attended Topeka Business School. She married Willard Ellis Scott on Dec. 4, 1942, in Council Grove. He was killed in action on Sept. 14, 1944, in France. On Dec. 20, 1947, she married Chester A. Strom in Council Grove. Mrs. Strom was raised in the Presbyterian Church and later joined the Methodist Church. She was employed by Fairmont Creamery for more than 20 years and then the Flint Hills Rural Electric Company from which she retired. She was an avid bowler and bridge player in Council Grove. A family gathering always included a competitive game of Rummy among other card games. When she retired she proudly participated with the Polar Bears, an early morning swim group. She served as a docent for the Morris County Historical Society giving tours of the Seth Hays Home and Post Office Oak. She also spent many hours volunteering in the Council Grove Library genealogy room. Mrs. Strom was an active member of United Methodist Women in Coffeyville. She was a lifetime member of Coffeyville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary and the Morris County Historical Society. She moved to Coffeyville in 2005 to be closer to her daughter. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy A. Wright (Larry) of Coffeyville; two granddaughters, Cami Misch of Keller, TX and Cari Redden (Jason) of Coffeyville, four great-grandchildren, Kylie and Morgan Elliott of Keller, TX and Matthew and Kenedi Redden of Coffeyville. She is also survived by Larry's children, Jim (Trudy) Wright of Coffeyville, and Cindy (Benjy) Fenske of Clever, MO; five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a sister, Erma Ruth Kendle, and a brother, William D. Kennedy. Following Betty's wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, KS. A Memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, 2020, at First Presbyterian Church, Coffeyville. The family requests everyone observe current safety measures. Memorials are suggested to Harry Hynes Hospice, Coffeyville First Presbyterian Church, Morris County Historical Society or The Betty Kennedy Strom Scholarship with the Council Grove Area Foundation. They may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Rd., Coffeyville, KS 67337.
