Obituary of William A. Long

William A. "Bill" Long, age 92, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville. Bill was born on February 14, 1929 in Edna, Kansas to Verl and Laura (Carlton) Long. He grew up in Edna where he attended school and graduated high school. Bill furthered his education at Coffeyville Community College and Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. On November 15, 1951 he married the love of his life, JoAnn Stine in Edna, Kansas at the First Baptist Church. That same year, Bill proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Upon receiving his honorable discharge he returned to the area to begin teaching mathematics. Bill started out teaching and coaching basketball in Chetopa, Kansas. He then went to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where he taught and worked for Stine Hardware for four years. In 1963 he moved his family to Coffeyville, Kansas where he taught math at both McKinley and Roosevelt Middle School for the next 35 years until his retirement in the late 1990's. Bill was a member of Grace Fellowship church in Coffeyville, and former member of the Jaycee's in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He was an avid fan of the Coffeyville Red Ravens sports teams. He enjoyed working around the house and most of all he loved the time he spent surrounded by his family and friends. He leaves behind his loving wife, JoAnn Long of Coffeyville, Kansas; sons, Mike (Cindy) Long of Dallas, Texas, Bill (Karen) Long of McKinney, Texas; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Hillmeyer and Mary Jacobs both of Florida. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Verl and Laura Long; his daughter, Leslie Ann; brother, Charles Long; half brothers, Wally and Buford. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Grace Fellowship church in Coffeyville at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Doug Mund will officiate. A private family burial will take place at a later date in the North Edna Cemetery in Edna, Kansas. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until 3 p.m. at David W Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
