Obituary of Daniel Wyatt Barnes

Daniel Wyatt Barnes, 21, of Caldwell, Kansas passed away Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Caldwell. Daniel was born on October 18, 1999 in Wichita, Kansas, the son of William “Woody” and Lori (Rader) Barnes. When Daniel was 5, the family moved to Caldwell where he grew up and attended school, graduating from Caldwell High School in 2018. After graduating high school Daniel attended Cowley County Community College. Daniel was a gifted artist. He was primarily self-taught and explored all different types of art including painting, drawing, sculpting, music and woodwork just to name a few. Daniel enjoyed playing the piano, especially for his grandmother, Carol Rader, who encouraged him when he was young to learn how to play. Carol and Daniel could often be found playing basketball after one of their piano sessions. He also enjoyed walking and exploring the banks of the Chikaskia River and fishing and gardening with his Grandpa Rader. Daniel had a special bond with his grandparents. Growing up next door was a blessing not only to Daniel, but to Larry and Carol also. They were involved in every aspect of Daniel’s life and were always there to cheer him on. Daniel loved and admired his little brother Will. They shared adventures throughout their childhood and some of his fondest memories were of their time together. The boys took care of a rather large herd of ornate box turtles together and Daniel watched and helped Will with his goats and chickens. The two spent summers at the pool and riding bikes, and started their National Park passports together on trips around the country. One trip, that included stops at Mt. Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Yellowstone and Grand Teton, was his favorite as he watched his little brother hang out the car window making animal calls to try and attract wildlife. Daniel was extremely proud of Will’s accomplishments as he watched him chase and achieve his goals as a young man. For the last couple of years Daniel lived & worked in Fayetteville, Arkansas and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he lived with his uncle, David Rader. He was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Caldwell. Survivors include his parents, Woody and Lori Barnes, his brother, Will Barnes, his grandfather, Larry Rader, all of Caldwell, and uncle David Rader of Oklahoma City; Daniel’s extended family is too large to mention all by name but includes Raders, Fasts, Misaks, Neumans, Barnes, Thompsons, Fullers, Hills and Kleins. Daniel was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Carol Rader and his paternal grandparents, Robert and Dean Barnes. A private family service will take place at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church with Father Thomas Hoisington officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Bridget Catholic Cemetery in Scammon, Kansas. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials in Daniel’s memory to d2up, an organization founded by Mark & Nanette Potter to promote mental health awareness and to provide strategies for social and emotional wellness (d2up.org).
