Obituary of Wayne Franklin Jones

Wayne Franklin Jones, age 79, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021 in Independence, Kansas. Wayne was born on November 26, 1941 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to William "Bill" F. and Mary M. (Wright) Jones. He grew up in Coffeyville where he attended school and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School in 1959. Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He served twenty years during his career and earned the rank of Chief Petty Officer E-7. During his time in the service he served on the U.S.S. Ranger, the U.S.S. Saratoga and the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt. Prior to his retirement he was stationed at the McAlester Ammunition Plant. After receiving his honorable discharge he returned to Coffeyville where he made his home. He had a career with the City of Coffeyville Electrical Department where he served as a boiler fireman and operator. On May 8, 1969 he was united in marriage to Waymeth A. Hoobler in Pasadena, Texas. The couple made their home in Coffeyville. His marriage to Waymeth also included her son from a previous marriage, Richard "Wayne" Joplin that Wayne loved and adored like he was his own. In time, the couple had two more children, Anthony "Tony" Wayne Jones and Angela Jones. Waymeth preceded him in death on July 29, 1994. Wayne later fell in love with his longtime companion, Shirley Webber. They have spent many wonderful years together and Wayne became close with Shirley's family as well. Countless family events, gatherings and holidays have been spent with the blended families all enjoying one another for years. He will be missed by so many. Wayne was of the Protestant faith and in previous years with Waymeth he attended the Presbyterian Church and in more recent years he attended the Methodist Church with Shirley. Wayne was a member of the local V.F.W. Post #1022, the American Legion Post #20 and a member of the Navy Nuclear Weapons Association. His hobbies included fishing, bird hunting and skeet shooting. He enjoyed trips to Bartlesville, Oklahoma to visit and catch up with his cousin, John Jones. He had a special cat named "Dude" and a special bird dog "Mike". Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Wayne Joplin and wife, Susan of Coffeyville, Kansas, Anthony "Tony" Jones and wife, Annie of Independence, Kansas, Angela Whitmore and husband, John of Overland Park, Kansas; loving companion, Shirley Webber and her family; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother, Robert Jones and wife, Phyllis of Alabama; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives and close friends. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mary Jones; wife, Waymeth Jones; sisters, Bonnie Gilfillan and Lynne Vandermark and a brother, John Jones. Following Wayne's wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. A Graveside Memorial Service will be Saturday, September 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., at Fairview Cemetery Veterans Memorial Patio with Pastor Mark Wilson officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1022 and Americal Legion Post #20.
