Shirley Ann McRay, age 85, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Shirley was born on July 5, 1936, in Anderson, Missouri to Robert and Veda (Sherman) Childers. She grew up in Anderson and attended local schools until the family moved to Coffeyville, Kansas in 1952. Shirley graduated in 1954 from Field Kindley Memorial High School.
In June of 1954 she was united in marriage to Bill Bromley. Of that union five children were born. The couple made their home in Coffeyville where they raised their children. The two later divorced.
Shirley was a very hard worker, over the years she worked for various places that included JCPenney, Continental Can, Sears, Western Southern Life Insurance, George Realtors along with owning an antique store known as "The White House '' located at 6th & Union. In 1961 she was crowned the Coffeyville Centennial Queen.
On May 23, 1980, she married her loving husband Cecil Lawrence "C.L." McRay in Coffeyville where they made their home. In addition to raising kids, keeping track of all the kids' events and hobbies, and taking care of the home, Shirley and C.L. owned and operated two local businesses, Sunflower Cleaners and Edgewood Flowers for several decades until retirement in 2007. C.L. preceded her in death on July 25, 2021.
Shirley was a member of the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville where she was baptized. Her hobbies were quilting, sewing, reading, gardening, family trips to the creek, and anything that allowed her to be outside, family get-togethers, she loved hosting a Christmas Eve gathering every year, canning, going to flea markets, auctions, rummage sales, traveling with C.L. around the country, prospecting and panning for gold and seeing new places.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Teresa Osborne and husband, Kevin, Kyle Bromley, Dirk Bromley and wife, Kathy, Kwin Bromley and wife, Sarah all of Coffeyville, Kansas, grandchildren, Sarah Pursley and husband, Brandon, Cole Osborne, Kirk Bromley and wife, Whitney, Krista Bromley, Kelli Bromley, Braylee Bromley, honorary grandchildren, Nick and Taylor Baxter, great grandchildren, Makayla Ross, Jaida Pursley, Sylas Osborne, Carter Bromley, Peyton Bromley, Parker Bromley, Pryor Bromley, a brother, Don Nash and wife, Carol, and her sister, Peggy Lee and husband, Ken along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by her father, Robert G. Childers, mother, Veda D. Nash, husband, C.L. McRay, son, Kirk W. Bromley, grandson, Zach Bromley, and her brother, Richard Childers.
Following Shirley's wishes, cremation will take place under the direction of David W Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
The family will be holding private inurnment services at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Coffeyville at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or to the Coffeyville Friends of Animals; these may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home 306 N. Cline Rd. Coffeyville, KS 67337.
