Obituary of Lois Nadine Barnett

Lois Nadine Barnett, age 93, of rural Wayside, Kansas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 11, 2022. Lois was born on Thanksgiving Day, 1928, in Minneola, Kansas to Walter and Mae (Downs) Cusick. She grew up in Minneola where she attended local schools and graduated from Minneola High School. Lois furthered her education at the San Jose Bible College in California. On June 23, 1948, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, James "Jim" E. Barnett on her parents' farm in Minneola. The couple first made their home in Minneola. In 1950, they moved to rural Wayside and into her grandparents' homestead. They made this farm their forever home. They were married for 56 years when James passed away in 2004. Lois remained at home on the homestead for a total of 72 years of her life. Lois was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She was kind, smart and hard working. From 1962-1991 she worked for City Publishing in Independence, KS; retiring as Data Entry Supervisor. Lois was a member of the Tyro Christian Church. She was active in the Joy Group and became a volunteer for several years at the Midwest Pregnancy Care Center; it focused on being a faith-based crisis pregnancy center. Lois enjoyed reading, gardening, sewing and embroidery. Most of all she loved spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She touched the lives of everyone she met and will be missed by so many. Lois is survived by her daughters, Katherine Hawthorne of Kingman, Arizona, Vicki Hand and husband, Buddy of Tyro, Kansas, bonus daughters, Veda Barnett of Copperas Cove, Texas, Margie Kuykendall and husband, John of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, ten grandchildren; Kathy Austin, Sheryl Stevens, Chuck Hawthorne, Kristi Herrera, Derral Hawthorne, Kyle Hand (Ashley), Evan Hand (Anna), Aimee Vogele (Garrett) , Hannah McKibben (Layne) and David Hand, eighteen great-grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, her sister, Erma Danley of Brandon, Vermont along with many extended relatives and close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sons, David and James V. Barnett, son-in-law, Charles Hawthorne and four grandchildren. Following Lois' wishes, the casket will be closed to the public. Friends may sign the guest register on Thursday, January 13, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, Kansas. Private Graveside Services will take place at Harrisonville Cemetery north of Tyro. Lois' grandson, Pastor Evan Hand, Youth Minister of Racine Christian Church will officiate. David W. Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will be hosting a Memorial Gathering for all the family and friends in Lois' honor at a later date and will advise the public once final arrangements have been set. The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the ministry of the donor's choosing or to one that was dear to Lois, Racine Christian Church Children's Ministry, Tyro Christian Church Children's Ministry, Ozark Christian College (Joplin, Missouri), Lincoln Christian University (Lincoln, Illinois), Hometown Hospice, or to any Crisis Pregnancy Center; these may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W.
