James Jewel Lowrey, age 91, of rural Coffeyville, KS went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, March 3, 2022 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
James was born on July 26, 1930 at home near Hickory Creek, Lenapah, OK to John and Vola (Sherron) Lowrey. He was the fourth of six children born to the couple.
James grew up fishing, hunting and trapping on the Verdigris River. As he grew older, he and his brother Jack would ride their horses to the Lowry Ranch and help with the haying season. James loved horses and riding and rode until this past Christmas when he gifted his granddaughter his horse.
James attended grade schools in Lenapah and for a short time in Tulsa. After the family moved back to Lenapah, he attended Lenapah High School. There is where he met the love of his life Doris L. Bowman in tenth grade when her family moved from Coffeyville to rural South Coffeyville.
After he graduated, he went to work at Morrow Foundry. Soon, he enlisted in the Air Force and served three years, from December 1950-1953. He was stationed in Washington and Okinawa before returning stateside. He returned home and began working at Parmac as a welder. During layoffs he also worked at Levenworth Steel and the Co-op Refinery.
He married Doris Bowman on Easter Sunday, April 18th, 1954 at Rock Creek Church of God in rural South Coffeyville.
He attended church services at Rock Creek Church of God and was saved and baptized under Pastor M.C. George. James also served as an elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was involved in the construction of the buildings on the church grounds that were used to hold camp meetings yearly.
He had strong Christian beliefs and the life he lived was a walking testimony to all who met him. He prayed daily for family, friends, the unsaved, the sick, anyone who needed a closer relationship with God and for the betterment of our nation. He always said we were lucky to have been born in America where we had the freedom and the opportunity others did not have.
He loved his family very much and enjoyed all the many times spent together. He loved to take hunting, fishing, and vacation trips to Colorado, Wyoming and many other locations. He had been to every state west of the Mississippi except one and made sure his children visited a lot of educational places besides the fun places.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; his parents, his brothers, Walter “Gene”, Jack, John Jr., and two sisters, Beulah Scullawl and Mary Ellen Victor.
Surviving to carry on his memory is his wife Doris, of the home. His son, Stephen and wife, Carol (Logan) Lowrey of rural Lenapah.
