Sedan -
Edith Irene Spire, age 92, of Sedan, Kansas passed away early Friday morning, January 12, 2007 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan, Kansas.
She was born June 18, 1914 south of Peru, Kansas to William and Atcha (Robinson) Vanderhoof. She attended Plymouth Grade School, north of Quivira Ranch and graduated from the Sedan High School in 1933.
On September 15, 1933, she married Jesse Eugene "Gene" Spire in Sedan, Kansas. They made their home in the Sedan area. She worked for Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company for nineteen years, retiring in 1974.
They lived most of their life south of Sedan until 2000 when they sold their home and moved to Chanute to live in an assisted living home before returning to Sedan in 2004 to live in Pleasant Valley Manor. He preceded her in death on February 19, 2006.
She enjoyed working outdoors, playing softball in her younger years, all sports and was an avid bowler.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kansas.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Potter and her husband Richard of Sedan, Kansas and Gloria Jean Shaw and her husband Jerry of Dewey, Oklahoma; one son, Ronald Eugene Spire and his wife Joyce of Chanute, Kansas; three sisters, Ada Mills and June Doty of Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas and Ruth Call of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene, and three sisters.
Family and friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2007 and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Dennis Spire officiating and Earl Tresner assisting. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church of Sedan and these remembrances may be left at the funeral home.
