Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George F. Baker, 84, of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, July 28, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 29, 1938, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Oliver Leland and Jewell Eva (Martin) Baker. George grew up in Coffeyville where he attended Lowell Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High and graduated from Field Kindley High School. George was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After receiving his honorable discharge, he returned to Coffeyville before moving to Tulsa Oklahoma where he attended and graduated from Tulsa Barber College in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While attending barber college he met the love of his life Claudette Denney. On June 19, 1962, George, and Claudette were united in marriage. Following their marriage, they made their home in South Coffeyville where they raised their three sons, Vinson, Mycale, and Dale. Claudette preceded him in death on April 7, 2007. In 2012, George married Carol (Dunn) Garner. Carol preceded him in death on September 11, 2014. George operated the City Barber Shop in South Coffeyville for 57 years. During these years George, Claudette and their three sons started Rafter B Cattle Company. When George wasn’t at the barber shop cutting hair and telling stories he loved to go to the farm and spent time working with the cattle, he always had a good time at the annual cattle round up. In 1964, George was instrumental in establishing the South Coffeyville Fire Department which he proudly served as Chief for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, and grandkids especially when they could get away to Grand Lake or as George would say Baker Boy’s Camp. After the loss of his second wife, Carol, George, and his son Mycale bonded strongly. Mycale eventually moved in to be a good companion and later to be his care giver. George’s memories will live on with his sons, Vinson (Susie) Baker of Nowata, Oklahoma, and Dale Baker of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma; his daughter-in-law, Barbara Baker of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma; his sister, Patricia Holeman of Coffeyville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mycale Baker on July 19, 2022; grandson, Zak Baker; his stepfather, Roy Busey; and brother, Jerry Baker. Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 6th, 2022, at the Veterans Memorial Patio in Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville with Pastor Wendall Abbott of the First Church of God in Nowata, Oklahoma officiating.
