Gene Sims, age 88, of Chautauqua, Kansas passed away Wednesday, November 8, 2006 at the Pleasant Valley Manor Nursing Home in Sedan, Kansas.
He was born June 28, 1918 in Caney, Kansas to Walter Jackson and Margaret Lena (Barry) Sims. He attended Chautauqua Schools before graduating in 1936 from Chautauqua High School. On May 17, 1940, he married Nina Cummings in Independence, Kansas. On June 21, 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp where he served until he was honorably discharged on November 27, 1945. They returned to Plainville, Kansas where they made their home until moving back to Chautauqua in 1971 where they made their home for the last 35 years.
He was a member of the Chautauqua Baptist Church, Vesper-Olive Lodge #136 in Sedan, York Rite Bodies of Hays, Kansas, Isis Shrine Temple of Salina, Kansas, and the Order of Eastern Star Vesper Chapter #148 of Sedan, Kansas.
He is survived by his wife Nina of the home; one son, Don Sims of Chautauqua, Kansas, two daughters, Jacquie Timken of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Sandy Yount of Sublette, Kansas; one sister, Jerri Anderson of Plainville, Kansas; 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Chautauqua Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Ks with Reverends Kevin Fogerty and Larry Adams officiating.
Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 10, 2006 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Pleasant Valley Manor and these remembrances may be left at the funeral home.
