Robert Delmar Jones, 77, of Coffeyville formerly of Longton and Fredonia, passed away Monday morning (Oct. 9, 2006) at his home.
He was born May 23, 1929 at Wellington, Kansas to Clarence and R. Ethyl (Davison) Jones. He grew up in the Braman, OK area were he attended the Oklahoma Military Academy. Following high school he attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS were he received a B.S. degree in education.
Mr. Jones was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
On September 7, 1951 he married Mary Anita Rothgeb, they were later divorced. His family lived in Longton, Coffeyville, Belle Plaine, Hugoton, Douglas, and Fredonia where Mr. Jones taught school. He was also a farmer and businessman. His last school position was as principal of Butts School south of Fredonia. After his retirement he made his home in the Longton and Fredonia area until moving to Coffeyville.
He was a member of the Buxton Christian Church, and the American Legion in Howard, where he was Past Commander. Mr. Jones was very active in the Democratic Party, running for Kansas State Representative in 1974.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan McDaniel of Independence; four sons, Ron Jones of Conway Springs, KS, Gus Jones and Rus Jones both of Longton, and Doug Jones of Fredonia; one sister, Shirley Hite of Fredonia; and one brother Bill Jones of Hutchinson; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 12, 2006) in the Buxton Christian Church southwest of Fredonia with Reverend Gene Benefiel officiating. Burial will be in Grace Lawn Cemetery in Howard with military honors conducted by the Howard American Legion Post.
Friends may call on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to service time at the Buxton Christian Church.
