LaVeda Dyer, age 94, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Friday morning, August 18, 2006 at her residence in Sedan.
She was born December 4, 1911 to Lois (Straughn) and John Mitchell in Ripley, Oklahoma. She was the oldest of seven children. She grew up in Ripley and graduated from Ripley High School in May, 1931. She moved to Longton, Kansas in July of 1934 to go to work for her aunt and uncle at the telephone exchange in Longton. She shortly thereafter met Paul Dyer and he gave her a ring on her birthday. On May 22, 1935, they were married in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He was the love of her life. Two sons were born to this union, Steven P. Dyer and Stanley D. Dyer. They moved to Sedan, Kansas in 1936. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Sedan on May 22, 1985. Their friends and family and all those who loved them were there. Paul preceded her in death on October 25, 1989.
LaVeda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. There are no words to write that can express how loved she was by all that knew her. She always made her grandchildren know how loved they were and they all have a very special place in their hearts for their priceless memories of spending their summers with Grandma and Grandpa Dyer at their home. LaVeda was an excellent cook, gardener, and loved to sew and lovingly shared it all with her family and loved ones. She also worked as a cook in the Sedan School System. She was a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Sedan and was baptized many years ago.
She is survived by her two sons, Steven P. Dyer and his wife, Glenna of Bethany, Oklahoma and Stanley D. Dyer and his wife Barbara of Ozark, Missouri; four grandchildren, Sheri Dyer of Prairie Village, Kansas, Tara Dyer of Kansas City, Missouri, Kelly Tosh and her husband David of Yukon, Oklahoma, and Norman Dyer and his wife Jennifer of Placentia, California; four great-grandchildren, Amber and Tyler Tosh and Blake and Abigail Dyer; three sisters, Doris Gates of Manford, Oklahoma, Sue Tarver of Stillwater, Oklahoma and Reva Mandeville of Stillwater, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Paul; her two brothers, John Corliss Mitchell and Norman Mitchell; one sister, Nila Reed and her daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Dyer.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2006 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with Joe Thomas officiating.
Friends may call on Monday, August 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas.
