Obituary of Charles W. Day

Sedan, KS - Charles Walter Day, Jr., 83, of Sedan, Kansas passed away Monday, May 22, 2006 at his home in Sedan. He was born September 1, 1922 at home on the ranch in Stanley, New Mexico to Charles W. Day, Sr. and Enid (Fisher) Day. He attended elementary and High School at Stanley until he graduated in 1940. He dedicated the next few years supporting the war effort working at a Navy Yard in California. He then attended Emmanuel Missionary College in Berrien Springs, MI where he graduated with a Major in Agriculture in 1950. He married Leora Kinder in a double wedding they had with her sister LaDell Kinder and his cousin Russell Fisher on June 27, 1948 in Vinita, Oklahoma. His daughter, Barbara Sue, was born in Hinsdalle, Ill. in 1950. Charles and Leora then dedicated their life to serving the Seventh Day Adventist Church in various mission fields. His first assignment was to Costa Rica from 1951 to 1953 where he developed a poultry industry, a Sugar cane industry, and a dairy where students could work to help pay their tuition. His son, Charles W. Day III was born in San Jose, Costa Rica in 1952. They then continued to Mexico, where he spent twelve years developing various industries where students could work which included a broom shop, a bakery, an orange orchard and a dairy. Their last son, David Day, was born in Montemorelos, Mexico in 1959. In 1967, Charles brought his family to Kansas so his children could attend schools in English and he could continue his education. He received his diploma for a Masters in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University in 1968. He then worked as a Business Manager for Enterprise Academy in Enterprise, Kansas. In the summer of 1971, he accepted a calling to start up a new industries for the Adventist Mission College in Lima, Peru. He developed the second largest bakery in the country. Over the following few years he was asked to go to various countries to help establish and develop industries for students to earn their education. From Peru, he was called to Ecuador, then Jamaica, and then back to Mexico. After 32 years of service to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, he retired in Sedan, Kansas where he took over the Day Cattle Company with his brother, Joe Day and sister, Dorothy Taylor. He is survived by his wife Leora (Kinder) Day of the home in Sedan; his daughter, Barbara Taylor of Indiana; two sons, Charles "Tom" Day III of Sedan, Kansas and David Day of Texas; two grandchildren, April Silva and Daniel Taylor both of Indiana and his sister, Dorothy Taylor of Sedan, Kansas. Friends may call Thursday, May 25, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Sedan Seventh Day Adventist Church with Pastor Steve Keiser and Pastor Herman Guy officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, Kansas. David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.
