Coffeyville - John Joseph Catone, 76, of Coffeyville, passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born October 1, 1936, at Pittsburgh, PA to Anthony and Jane (Hojnacki) Catone. John grew up and attended school in Swissvale and Rankin, PA where he graduated from high school. After high school John attended and played basketball at Coffeyville Community College, he completed his education at Pittsburg State University. On October 5, 1956, he married Jane Walterscheid at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Pittsburgh, PA area where John was a high school physical education teacher, football and basketball coach for 30 years with the East Allegheny School District. John coached a physical fitness team that won national honors, and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was a member of North American Martyrs Catholic Church in Monroeville, PA, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. John loved sports. Survivors include his wife, Jane "Dinger" Catone of the home; one son, Jim Catone and wife Carrie of North Huntington, PA; one daughter, Carol Oneslager and husband Chris of Wichita, KS; and four grandchildren, Maria Catone and Johnny Catone of North Huntington, PA, and Olivia Oneslager and Sophia Oneslager of Wichita. A Rosary Vigil Service will be at 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 30, 2013 at Holy Name Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ben Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may sign the register book on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family suggests memorials to Holy Name Catholic School; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
