Ida Dorothy Coward, age 74, of rural Havana, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at her home.
She was born June 4, 1939 in Hale, Kansas to Harold Aiken and Josephine (Key) Aiken. She grew up and attended school in Elk City graduating from Elk City High School. After high school she was a member of the Women's Army Corp. as a Military Lab Tech where she met and married Redden William Coward Jr. on April 3, 1959 in Columbia, South Carolina. After traveling the world throughout his military career, they made their home in rural Havana, Kansas since 1973. She received her degree from Coffeyville Community College as a Lab Tech in her later years. She was preceded in death by her husband on March 16, 1992.
She enjoyed reading and gardening.
She is survived by two sons; Rodney Coward of Sedan, Kansas and Randy Coward and wife Cynthia of Coffeyville, Kansas; three daughters; Camellia Hills and husband Leon of Valeda, Kansas, Sandra Davis and husband Steven of Topeka, Kansas, and Jill Coward of Frontenac, Kansas; three brothers; Melvin Aiken of rural Havana, Kansas, Harold Aiken of Lawrence, Kansas, and George Aiken of Whitehouse, Texas; three sisters, Delora Brown of Escondido, California, Geneva Aiken of Belgrade, Montana, and Julia Egerstrom of San Marcos, California; eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Patrick Coward, her husband, and her parents.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Lone Cherry Southern Baptist Church in rural Havana with Pastor Gary Cole officiating. Burial will follow at the Riley Cemetery in rural Sedan, Kansas
Family and friends may call Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Lone Cherry Southern Baptist Church in rural Havana, from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
The family has requested memorials to the American Diabetes Association and can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
