Coffeyville - Eugene H. "Gene" Hughey, 89, of Coffeyville passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He was born July 29, 1923 at Coffeyville, to John Howard and Edith Irene (Smoot) Hughey. Gene grew up and attended school in Coffeyville, graduating from Field Kindley High School, McFarland Trade School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II, after receiving his honorable discharge he returned to Coffeyville. On September 9, 1943 he married Anna M. Cerny at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville. Gene was General Manager of Kanoma Coop from 1963 to 1975, when he became owner and operator of National Marketing Co. at 8th and Buckeye which her operated for 30 years retiring in 2005. He enjoyed his work, especially the people he served, but above all he loved the time spent with his family. Gene was a member of the First United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Post #1022, and American Legion Post #20. Survivors include his wife, Ann of the home; two sons, Jeff Hughey and wife Mary of Joplin, MO, and Randy Hughey and wife, Cyndy of Perry, OK; two sisters, Derrel Walker of Manhattan, KS, and Jill Marchand of Columbia, MO; two brothers, Jack Hughey of Houston, TX, and Bob Hughey of Columbia, MO; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, with Rev. John Collins officiating. Following Gene's wishes cremation will take place after the service and a private family inurnment will take place at Restlawn Memorial Park at a later date. Friends may call on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
