Obituary of Barbara Jean Powell

Sedan - Barbara Jean Powell, age 86, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas. She was born October, 28 1927 in Howard, Kansas to Russell "Hop" McSpadden and Clara Belle (Wright) McSpadden. She grew up in Howard before moving to El Dorado, Kansas where she graduated from High School. She attended college at Emporia State University. On September 15, 1944 she married Wayne D. "Dutch" Powell in Sedan, Kansas and he survives at Pleasant Valley Manor. She was a lifelong resident of the Sedan area. She taught dance lessons, Tap dance Ballroom dance, just to name a few, she also gave piano lessons for a number of years. She eventually received her Bookkeeping Degree from Coffeyville Community College and worked for Dewey Pipe and Supply in Dewey, Oklahoma, and then for Bob Miller and Johnny Thomas at the Chautauqua County Shop and Supply. Barbara was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Sedan. She played the organ at the church, she also enjoyed playing the piano; she loved to cook, watching baseball, and watching all of her grandkids play ball. Survivors include two daughters; Annette McMillin (David of Independence, Kansas; children, Scott McMillin & Megan McMillin Walker); Kimberly Schmidt of Spring Hill, Kansas;(children, Tricia Masterson & Brandon Carra); one son, Larry Powell (Cindy of Sedan, Kansas; children Brett, Blake, Sam & Paula) . Also surviving is a granddaughter, Nicole Boulanger Hinkle of Copan, Ok, along with four great-grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by one son, Russell Wayne Powell and one daughter, Paula Powell Boulanger and her parents. Church Services will be held at the Epiphany Episcopal Church at 10:00 am., Monday, March 31, 2014 in Sedan, Kansas with The Reverend Foster Mayes officiating. Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan. Family visitation will be held prior to service time on Monday, March 31, 2014. The family has suggested memorials to the Sedan High School Music Department or the Friends of the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter; those donations can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
