Marie Gurskey, 74, of Independence passed away March 24, 2012 at Mercy Hospital Independence.
She was born August 28, 1937 to Robert and Mildred (Taylor) Heale at Coffeyville. Marie grew up and attended schools in Coffeyville, graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1957.
On November 17, 1962 she married Clifford Gary Coatney at Independence. Following their marriage they made their home in Sedan. Marie worked as a CNA, Med-Aide, Activity director and cook at nursing homes and at the Holly Cafe. Together they had three children, he preceded her in death on July 14, 1972.
She later married Edwin Gurskey, they were later divorced.
Marie lived in Independence the last three years.
She attended the Baptist Church; while living in Independense she attended the Bolton Friends Church with her daughter. She loved to bake and decorate cakes, she enjoyed crafts, quilting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include one son Gary Coatney of Independence; two daughters Kathy Smith of Independence and Mary Harrison of Wichita; one sister Beverly Humphrey of Chetopa; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by one son, husband, parents, three brothers and one sister.
Memorial service will take place Thursday, March 29, 2012 at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with Pastor Grady Miller of the Bolton Friends Church officiating. Cremation has taken place.
