Lela Rose Rutledge, age 98, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, Kansas.
She was born November 26, 1915 in Elgin, Kansas to Cornelius Cardin and Agnus (Sweeney) Cardin. She was raised in Elgin and she graduated from Elgin High School.
On May 21, 1932 she married Frank Rutledge in Elgin, Kansas. They lived in Elgin before moving to Oklahoma and Texas before coming back to Elgin in 1951. She was preceded in death by her husband on February 3, 1984.
Lela was a member of the Elgin First United Methodist Church, she also was involved with the quilting clubs at the church, she loved cooking, loved her family, and being outside; She also liked horses and cattle.
Survivors include her two children; A'meta Dilley of Sedan, Kansas and Jack Rutledge of Sedan, Kansas; nine grandchildren, Darla Walls, Carla Winters, Gene Rutledge, Randy Rutledge, Jacqueline Dilley, Rhonda Lampson, William Dilley, Sherry Guardiano, and Michelle Zimmer; seventeen great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.
Lela was preceded in death by two children, husband, parents, and one son-in-law.
Services will be held Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Elgin First United Methodist Church in Elgin with Reverend Jerry Bever officiating. Burial will follow at the DeBusk Cemetery in rural Elgin, Kansas.
Family and friends may call Monday, March 17, 2014 from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
The family has suggested memorials to the Elgin First United Methodist Church or the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
