Elmer Floyd McCann, age 91, of Sedan, Kansas died Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas.
Elmer was born October 5, 1916 in Milfay, Oklahoma. His parents were John and Sallie (Billington) McCann. His parents passed on at an early age leaving him in the care of his older sisters and brother. He graduated High School in Oxford, Kansas. He married Hazel Jeane Evans April 10, 1937 in Ada, Oklahoma. Together they traveled in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Illinois while he worked in the oilfields. He worked in the shipyards and aircraft plants in California during the war. They moved back to Kansas in 1943 and lived in Oxford, Lyons, Arkansas City, Longton and El Dorado. While they were living in Longton, Kansas they owned the movie theater, grocery store and a farm and he served as the mayor. In 1962 he purchased a clothing and furniture store in Sedan. He was also involved in ranching and oil production. He and his wife enjoyed going to Texas for the winter and they had many good times playing cards and dominos with friends.
He is survived by his wife Jeane of the home in Sedan, Kansas, sons Dean McCann of Sedan, Kansas, Kent McCann of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and daughter Katrina McCann of Dallas, Texas; ten grandchildren, Darla Carter, Kevin Oursler, Mark McCann, Marcia Muncy, Denise Jones, Cara West, Eric McCann, Todd Fitch, Lori Everett and Tammy Hoover; twenty great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and son-in-law and daughter-in-law Ed and Linda Oursler.
He was preceded in death by twin daughters Caryn Stephens and Caryl Oursler, one brother and five sisters.
Family and friends may call from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Paul Stetz and Dr. J. Dean McNamara officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorial contributions to the First Baptist Church Youth Group and these remembrances may be left with the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
