Coffeyville - Winifred N. Maxson, 88, of rural Edna passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. She was born on February 12, 1923 at Coffeyville to Arthur and Elizabeth (Roberts) Higginson. Winifred grew up in the Valeda and Edna area attending Valeda Grade School and Edna High School graduating with the class of 1941. On January 1, 1942 she married Dale Maxson at McPherson, KS. Following their marriage they made their home in the Edna area. While her husband was in the service during World War II Winifred began working as bookkeeper at the stockyards in Coffeyville, and later at Maxson Sales in Coffeyville and Parsons, and helped her husband on their ranch near Edna. She was a member of the Edna United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, taught Sunday School and Bible School at her church, member of Grange, and Royal Neighbors, charter member of the Edna Roundup Club, 4-H Leader for many years, Kansas Master Farmer Homemaker, Kansas FFA Honorary State Farmer, local FFA Chapter Honorary Farmer for both Labette County High School and Field Kindley High School. Winifred enjoyed helping plan reunions and community events being held at their cabin on Maxson Lake near Edna, she liked scrap booking, reading, chaperoning church, school and FFA Judging trips, and antiques. She especially loved time spend with her family, friends and being involved in her community. Survivors include her husband, Dale Maxson of the home; two sons, Danny Maxson and wife Peggy of South Edna, OK, and Rickey Maxson of Monkey Island, OK; one daughter Kristi Esquibel and husband Mike of Edna; one brother, Dale Higginson and wife Wymetta of Altamont, KS; five grandchildren, Timmy Tyson Maxson and wife Teresa, Tracy Joe Maxson and wife Kim, Ryle Duncan Maxson and wife Ashley, Karen Ann Maxson, and Michael Rio Esquibel; and four great-grandchildren, Tegan, Maxson, Taya Maxson, Taliyah Maxson, and Tracer Maxson. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Timmy Dale Maxson on October 4, 1964 Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012, at the Edna United Methodist Church with Rev. Lane Roberts and Rev. Dean Knewtson officiating. Burial will follow in the North Edna Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, and from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Edna United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church in Edna. The family suggests memorials to the Edna United Methodist Church or Labette County 4-H; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville. KS.
