First let me correct some Obit info ,she also taught at Sedan High School,Sedan ,Ks several yrs. She was one of my a favorite teachers.
My freshmen yr she worked with me for music contests I did a solo and at District at Emporia St College it was time for me to do my thing at the women's gym as we walked in I noticed this other kid with the same music/song I was going to preform.I pointed it out to Miss Pond and she asked do you want to listen to him sing ?. I said no, but she went in an listened and when she came out she looks at me and said well he did the low note version which doesn't do a thing for the song, you'll be fine.Well, guess who was up nextYep me. I walked in took my place and you had to announce your own song and I said I will also sing "Sing Me A Chanty" and everybody laughed-HUM .
Well I got thru it and did it one of my best ever and went and sat down by Richard Wells who'd been to State Contest several times and he turns to me and says I'll see you at state(you had to receive a 1 to go to State).About that time the judge motioned me up to his table and tells me he gave me a 1 but suggested I change my song as the high notes are almost out of my range as I turned to go sit down I held up one finger and I thout Miss Pond was going to have a storke she was so excited and yelling aa was my mom to.I think they were more excited than me.Well I didn't change songs and blew it at state, nerves caught up to me a Freshman at state ,and put page 2 at page 4 and vice versa, received a 3,Oh well. I always appreciated how much hardwork Miss Pond put in with me. I wrote her a letter a few months ago and needed to update it an do a rewrite and kept putting it off, Know I'm sad and mad at myself for not getting that letter done and sent.
She would have been proud to know I sang in Tulsa Jr College Choir,(membership by audition only) for two yrs, took a college voice class and had to learn Italian Aria's in Italian.I was the only one in the class who could sing an Aria all the way thru by memory which was our final test, that was fun. CARO MIO BEN..I also sang a couple of times with my brother-in laws band at a club he played at here in Tulsa, all that was in my letter that I never got done. DAMN! Thank You Miss Pond in believing in me and helping me.You were a jewel.
