Sedan - Dewayne C. "Barney" Barnett, age 89, of Sedan, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas.
He was born June 26, 1922 in Hewins, Kansas to Francis L. and Mattie V. (Cabler) Barnett. He graduated from Bowring High School in Bowring, Oklahoma. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army serving from 1942 to 1945 when he was honorably discharged. He was a member of the 5th Armored Division.
On February 24, 1946 he married Earlene Bowersock in Sedan, Kansas. They made their home in Sedan and owned and operated Barnett's Food Center in Sedan from 1948 until they retired in 1989 after closing the store. He was preceded in death by his wife Earlene on December 25, 2000
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Sedan VFW, American Legion Post 6373, Sedan Lion's Club, was a previous board member of the Caney Valley Electric Cooperation for nine years, and also was in a bowling league a number of years ago. He also helped with cookouts at the Sedan and Oxford Schools for many years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Earlene, his parents, six brothers and four sisters, and two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchild.
He is survived by two sons, Larry and wife Sue Barnett of Sedan, Kansas and Jerry and wife Beth Barnett of rural Sedan, Kansas, one daughter, Terri Wiseman of Oxford, Kansas; one sister, Georgia J. Garner of Ardmore, Oklahoma; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and twelve step-great-grandchildren; and a special friend Marge Alford of Sedan, Kansas.
Church Services will be held Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sedan, Kansas with Reverend Gene DeWitt officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan with military rights by the United States Army Honor Guard of Fort Riley, Kansas.
The family has suggested memorials to the First Baptist Church in Sedan. Those remembrances can be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
