Betty Jean Meeker, 80, of Coffeyville passed away Thursday morning August 4, 2011 at her home.
She was born June 3, 1931 at Columbus, KS to Ruben and Josie (Houser) Carlson. Betty grew up and attended school at Columbus graduating from Columbus High School.
On February 23, 1951 she married Robert L. "Bob" Meeker at Eureka Springs, AR. Following their marriage they lived in several different locations while her husband was in the U.S. Navy. After his discharge they lived in Nowata, OK for a short time, moving to Coffeyville in 1957.
While living in Columbus she worked at Pearl Jeffries Insurance Agency, and the Firestone Store. After moving to Coffeyville she worked at Sears and Roebuck, Sunset Disposal, and Thompson Brothers, for many years Betty and Bob operated the concession stand at State Lake.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Coffeyville. Betty enjoyed making ceramics and loved taking care of and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband Bob Meeker of the home; her daughter Robin Bustos and husband David of Coffeyville; her son, Robert C. Meeker and wife Normita of Las Vegas, NV; Benny Blalock of Kernesville, NC; one sister, Hazel Kresyman of Columbus; and one grandson, Logan Bustos of Coffeyville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Josie Carlson; one brother, Robert Carlson; and one sister, Mary Ann Thompson.
Following Betty's wishes cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service Celebrating her life will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Coffeyville with Pastor Clay Bramble officiating.
Friends may sign the register book on Monday, August 8, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Assoc., the Leukemia Assoc., or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
