Elizabeth P. Ryan, 98, of Coffeyville, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.
She was born January 12, 1913 in Caney, KS to Frank and Lily (Gray) Pocock. Elizabeth grew up and attended school in Caney graduating from Caney High School. Following high school she attended and graduated from Pittsburg State University, and did post-graduate work at Boise State University in Boise, ID. She taught at Lincoln School in Caney, KS from 1939 to 1946.
On March 14, 1942 she married Jim Ryan in Coffeyville, KS. Shortly after her husband returned from military service, they moved to Boise, ID. Mrs. Ryan taught school in Boise for many years retiring in 1978. After returning to Coffeyville in 1990 her name was placed in the Boise Hall of Fame for her teaching and community service.
Mrs. Ryan was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Coffeyville.
Local survivors include one niece, Mary Bookter and husband Don of Coffeyville.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jim Ryan in 2007, one son, one grandson, and two brothers.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church Chapel with Rev. John Collins of the First United Methodist Church and Chaplain Mike Graham of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney.
Friends may call on Monday, July 25, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
The family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
