Mary Elizabeth Hulsey, 90, of Coffeyville passed away Monday, June 13, 2011 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, OK.
She was born January 29, 1921 in the Sandy Ridge community northwest of Coffeyville to Arthur Clinton and Maude May (James) Whitaker. Mary spent her childhood in the Sandy Ridge community where she attended Clear Creek School, when she was in the 4th grade they moved to Chetopa where she completed her education graduating from Chetopa High School
On December 21, 1940 she married Lloyd Ray Hulsey at Joplin, MO. Following their marriage they made their home in Chetopa until moving Coffeyville in 1953 when Ray and Mary purchased Superior Poultry and Egg. In 1967 they opened Kwik-Stop, Coffeyville's first convenience store and formed Superior Foods. They later purchased and operated George's Cafeteria for many years. Her husband Ray preceded her in death on May 3, 2011.
Mary was a member of the First Christian Church, and was a former Deaconess, a former member of Honey Bee Good Sam's Camping Club, and an original founder of the National Foster Parents Assoc.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Hulsey and wife, Claudia of Coffeyville, and Bob Hulsey and Sam Wheeler of Tulsa, OK; two daughters, Sue Rudziensky of Coffeyville, and Mary Ann Widmer and husband Richard of Bayfield, CO; one sister, Ruth Martin of Derby; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and were foster parents to fifteen children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and four sisters
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Coffeyville with Pastor Clay Bramble officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call on Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
