Obituary of Ruth E. Call

Sedan - Ruth Vanderhoof Call was born on May 1, 1922, North of Sedan, Kansas, now known as the Quivera Scout Ranch, to William and Atcha (Robinson) Vanderhoof. Ruth was the youngest of seven girls. She attended elementary school at Plymouth school and high school in Sedan, Kansas graduating with the class of 1940. On August 30, 1941 she married Doyle Clinton Call in Independence, Kansas. After their marriage, they immediately became involved in farming and ranching. They moved to their current home North of Wauneta, Kansas in 1943 and lived there until July, 2007, where they shared time between their ranch home and their home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. In 1956, Ruth operated a beauty shop in Cedar Vale; KS for a few years, then moved her shop to their ranch home and operated it over 15 years. Ruth was a big support and help to Doyle with their cattle operation through the years. In 2006, after 65 years of helping Doyle manage their ranch land, they received the Pioneer Award for a lifetime of Conservation in Chautauqua, County, Kansas/ In her younger years there was little she couldn't do and would attempt almost anything. She leased land for oil and drilled several wells when she was in her 70's and managed to get some oil production. Throughout her life, Ruth loved games. She bowled in a league for a number of years. She took up golf in her 50's and thoroughly loved it. She and Doyle were members of the Sedan Country Club and enjoyed playing in the scotch foursomes on Sunday afternoons. Ruth enjoyed playing golf and pinochle with her children and grandchildren when they were visiting. She loved playing "bridge" and was known as an excellent player. She was very competitive and her motto has been "work hard" and "play hard". Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wauneta where she enjoyed playing the organ from time to time. She was a past member of the Sedan Country Club and Ladies Golf Association. She was an active member of the 55+ Activity Center in Bartlesville and was a member of several bridge clubs. Ruth is survived by one daughter, Mavis Call Smith and husband, John, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; two sons, Larry Clinton Call and wife Linda, of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Calvin W. Call and wife, Mary of Jefferson City, Missouri. In addition, she is survived by six grandchildren that include: Jeff Smith and wife, Vicki of Edmond, Oklahoma, Corey Smith of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Jason Call and wife, Melissa of Jefferson City, Missouri, Doug Call and wife, Jennifer of Kansas City, Missouri, Becky Call of Independence, Missouri, and William Call of St. Louis, Missouri. She is also survived by three great-grandsons: Justin and Austin Smith of Edmond, Oklahoma and Kendall Call of Jefferson City, Missouri and one great-granddaughter, Katie, of Kansas City, Missouri, plus 3 nieces and 6 nephews. After 67 years of marriage, she was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle C. Call, on January 11, 2009. Also her parents, and six sisters, Erma Vanderhoof, Ethel Farris Rentschler, Opal Dilley Owens, Edith Spire, Ada Mills, and June Doty, plus 2 nieces and 3 nephews. Family and friends may call on Thursday, May 26, 2011 from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. Services will be held Friday, May 27, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sedan with Rev. Jerry Bever officiating. Burial will follow at the Round Mound Cemetery in Wauneta, Kansas. Family has suggested memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Wauneta or the 55+ Activity Center in Bartlesville.
