James H. Sumter, age 90, of rural Pawhuska, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at his home.
He was born March 30, 1921 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma to Charles and Naomi (Avery) Sumter. He grew up and attended school in the Pawhuska area until the eighth grade. He later completed his GED from the Oklahoma Agriculture School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving his country from 1946 until 1949. He was a member of the 6th Division 20th Infantry. He was honorably discharged January 11, 1949.
On September 1, 1950 he married June Parker in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. They made their home in Osage County, Oklahoma where he worked as a Ranch Forman for C.C. Bledsoe Ranch for twenty five years. They also lived in Peru, Kansas for a short time.
He attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. He worked as a rock mason and also built picture frames, furniture and was a welder.
He is survived by his wife June Sumter of the home; one daughter, Janice Boies and husband Joe of Ponca City, Oklahoma; one son, Steve Sumter and wife Shannon of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one sister, Jeannie Christie of Wichita Falls, Texas; one brother, Dee Sumter of Fayetteville, Arkansas; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers and five sisters.
Burial has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
