Sedan -
Alfred Arthur McNown, 91, of Sedan, passed Friday (February 1, 2008) at Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan.
He was born October 29, 1916 in the Belknap Community northwest of Sedan to William Harvey and Florence Elizabeth (McAlister) McNown. He grew up on the family farm and attended Prairie Center School.
On December 28, 1938 he married Viola Stephens. Following their marriage they made their home on their farm in the Belknap Community where their three daughters were raised. Mrs. McNown preceded him in death on September 15, 1953.
On October 27, 1961 he married Thelma Lucile Webb Stephens. Following their marriage they continued living in the Belknap area where Alfred farmed and raised Hereford cattle. Mrs. McNown preceded him in death on February 4, 1996. Following her death Alfred continued living on the farm until moving to Sedan in 2002.
He was a member of the Belknap Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Pauline Doty of rural Sedan, Jeanne Crawford of rural Sedan, and Joan Beckenholdt of Sedan; one brother, Harrison McNown of Winfield; six grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday (January 5, 2008) in the First United Methodist Church in Sedan with Rev. Jerry Bever of the First United Methodist Church, Rev. Gary Boles of the Belknap Church and Rev. Norman Reeves, Hospice Care of Kansas Chaplain officiating.
Friends may call on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Sedan Food Bank, and the Belknap Community Fund; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed, c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 North Douglas, Sedan Kansas 67361.
