George Wesley Chambers, 94, Coffeyville, died Thursday January 27, 2011 at Sedan, KS. He was born on October 21, 1916 to George E. and Minnie Flo (Ifer) Chambers in Delaware, OK.
George graduated from Delaware High School in 1934 and attended Oklahoma State University. He served during WWII and was in the Army from 1943-1946, and was stationed in the Philippines. Upon returning from the military service he resumed his employment at Co-op Oil Refinery until retirement in 1979. During his retirement he spent many days enjoying his grandsons who were very special to him.
On November 6, 1949 he was united in marriage to Doris Duckworth. In 1953 they moved into the house George built for them and lived there, their entire 61 years of marriage.
George was a founding member of Black Dog Campers Club. He enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, and family vacations including a camping trip in 1967 to Alaska. He began the hobby of amateur radio as a young man, his call letters were KOBEJ. George loved his Bob Willis western swing music and OSU football.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Doris Chambers, daughters Elizabeth Newcomb and husband Jack of rural Chautauqua County Kansas and Donna Chambers of Tulsa, OK, three grandsons Jerod Newcomb and wife Jessica of Kenosha, WI, Grant Newcomb of El Dorado, KS, Sam Higgins of Tulsa, OK, and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister Peggy Chambers.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Tyro Christian Church in Tyro, with David Bycroft officiating. Burial will be in the Robbins Cemetery, west of Coffeyville.
Friends may call on Monday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
