Sylvester "Sparky" Spire, 87, passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at the Sedan City Hospital in Sedan.
He was born on August 19, 1923 in rural Chautauqua, Kansas to John S. and Minnie Mae (Harkrader) Spire. He attended and graduated from Sedan High School. After high school he received an associate's degree from North Plains Junior College in Borger, Texas.
On July 29, 1944 he married Millie Sumner in Sedan, Kansas. They later moved to Texas and he worked as a Maintenance Supervisor for Phillips Petroleum at Adams Terminal Plant in Pasadena, Texas for 42 years retiring in 1985. They moved back to Chautauqua in 1986.
He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua. He enjoyed working and staying busy all the time, gardening, and tinkering with a lot of different things. He also enjoyed his peach, apple, and pecan trees.
He is survived by his wife Millie Spire of the home; Two Sons, Dewayne and wife Hazel Spire of Chautauqua, Kansas and Dennis and wife Brenda Spire of San Marcos, Texas; one daughter, Ellen Rushing of Sedan, Kansas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Roy, Ambrose, and J. Eugene Spire.
Family and friends may call on Friday, January 28, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and the family will be receiving friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
Church services will be held Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kansas with Pastor Larrie Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Chautauqua.
Memorials are suggested to the New Life Baptist Church and remembrances may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
