John Tasker, Jr. 90 of rural Tyro, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
He was born February 9, 1920 at the family farm near Tyro. He grew up and attended school in the Tyro area, and graduated from Field Kindley High School in Coffeyville in 1939. In 1940 after receiving a scholarship he started classes at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army serving in the Signal Corp at the Panama Canal Zone and the Galapagos Islands. He qualified for Officers Training School and was transferred to Fort Monmouth, NJ. After being commissioned a Second Lieutenant he was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands. He was discharged from the Army as a First Lieutenant on January 1, 1946.
Following his discharge he returned to Kansas State University, graduating in June 1948 with a Bachelors degree in Ag-Journalism. John returned to the family farm to farm with his Dad, he continued farming and operating a Grade A Dairy for many years. For many years he measured Wheat acreage all over Montgomery County, and served on the Fawn Creek Township Board.
John served 2 terms as chairman of the County Extension Council , served on the County ASCS Commission, and coached several 4-H Judging Teams.
Survivors include one sister, Louise Tweedy of Fayetteville, AR; several nieces and nephews, and close friends, Tim Rigdon and Ed Theiss.
A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Tyro United Methodist Church in Tyro with Brad Sanders officiating.
Friends may sign the register book on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.
