Herman L. Allen, 85, of Coffeyville passed away Tuesday night, January 11, 2011 at the Cherryvale Nursing Home in Cherryvale, KS
He was born January 6, 1926 at Childers, OK to Virgil Ambrose and Rose Lee (Manley) Allen. He grew up and attended school in Childers, OK, Nowata, OK, Lenapah, OK, and Coffeyville.
He was a veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army from March 1944 until November 1948 when he received his honorable discharge. During World War II he served in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, receiving three Bronze Stars, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
On November 23, 1976 he married Shirley Keeton at Miami, OK. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville where Mr. Allen was a machinist at Funk Mfg. Co.
Mr. Allen was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1022 and American Legion Post #20. He enjoyed rock and fossil collecting, fishing, dancing, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Allen of the home; one son, Rusty Allen and wife, Becky of Atlanta, KS; one daughter, Karen Sue Houser and husband, Woody of Derby, KS; four grandchildren, Cara Dennison, and Darci Smith both of Benton, KS, Darla Hoffpauir of Houston, TX, and Larry Baker of Derby, KS; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011 at the First Christian Church in Coffeyville with Pastor Clay Bramble officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the First Christian Church or the Charity of the Donor's Choice; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
