Tommy W. Newcomb, 96, passed away Monday, January 10, 2011, at the Sedan City Hospital. Services will be held Thursday, January 13, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the New Life Baptist Church in Chautauqua, Kansas, with Earl Tresner officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery at Chautauqua.
Tommy was born January 7, 1915, in Ringling, OK, to Van Thomas and Georgia Newcomb. He was the 5th child of eleven siblings. He attended schools in Oklahoma. He married Opal Stewart on September 5, 1936. They raised three daughters, Patty Sue, Tommie Lou, and Terri Ann. During that time, they lived in Oklahoma and Texas, moving to Sedan in 1953, and later to Chautauqua in 1964. He was a member of the United States Air Force. Tommy worked many jobs in his lifetime; he was a house-mover with his brothers, worked in the ammunition plant during WWII at Pryor, OK, he was a tool pusher on rigs in Texas, a roustabout and pumper for Jones Brothers Oil Company and later Jones and Buck Development.
Tommy enjoyed woodworking and painting items he made, fishing, and playing cards and especially playing dominos. Playing Bingo was one of his favorite activities at Pleasant Valley Manor, where he lived for the past two years. He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church and Chautauqua Senior Citizens.
Tommy is survived by his daughters and families: Pat and Lee Jones, Sedan; Lou and Bob Anderson, Chautauqua; and Terri and JL Tunison, Moline; 5 grandsons: Randy and Dee Bellieu, Langley, OK; Mark and Susan Jones, Houston, TX; Mike and Michelle Jones, Sedan; Matt and Jolynn Jones, Sedan; and Shane Tunison, Juction City; 18 great-grandchildren and one very special great-great grandson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, on June 9, 2004.
Family and friends may call on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
Memorials are suggested to Pleasant Valley Manor Activity Fund and remembrances may be left in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 209 N. Douglas, Sedan, Kansas 67361.
