Melba Jean Johnson, 85, passed to her heavenly home on December 16, 2010 at Windsor Place in Coffeyville, Kansas, where she had been a resident since October, 2008.
Melba was born to Alvin Harrison and Emma Leona (Lee) Burt on May 29, 1925, at Caney, Kansas. She married Bill F. Johnson on March 15, 1941 at Nowata, Oklahoma. This year they celebrated 69 years of marriage.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Keystone Sunday School Class, and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Coffeyville.
Melba was employed some in the Coffeyville area but her main objective was raising and caring for her family. Melba enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping but most of all she enjoyed visits from friends and family and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren as they played at the Johnson home in Indian Village.
She is survived by one sister Betty Lamar and husband, Kenneth, of Haysville, Kansas; four daughters, Aundra Jean Griffiths of Paxico, Kansas; Connie Lee Perkins and husband, Tim, of Caney, Kansas; Judith Ann Looney and husband, Jerry, of Towanda, Kansas; Nisha Gay Tosh and husband, Steve, of Centerton, Arkansas; one son, Gary L. Johnson and wife, Donna, of Branson, Missouri; 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.
Melba was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Clarence and Marion, and two infant sisters, Velma and Thelma.
Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 23, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, Tenth and Elm Streets, with Rev. John Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney, KS.
Friends may call on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial to the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
