Obituary of Betty Jo Layton Mills

Sedan -Betty Jo Layton Mills, age 71, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Via Christi St. Francis Hospital with her family by her side in Wichita, Kansas. She was born July 23, 1942 in Cedar Vale, Kansas to Howard "Shorty" Layton and Maude (Bohannon) Layton. She grew up in the Hewins area and attended school in Hewins before graduating from Cedar Vale High School class of 1960. Betty Jo lived in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before coming to Sedan in 2004. She worked in retail sales for many years and worked at The Gift Gallery in Sedan since 2004. Betty Jo was a member of the Sedan Lion's Club, Sedan Chamber of Commerce, and The Chautauqua County Fair Board, and also Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association. She loved going to the movies, shopping, working at the Gift Gallery, and most of all visiting with people. Survivors include her three children; Marijo Roberts and husband Mike of Sedan, Kansas, Lisa Hudson of Sedan, Kansas, and Christopher Mills and wife Karissa of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six grandchildren; Eric Rogers and wife Amy, Holly Sutton and husband Steven, Dayton Drummonds, Taryn Mills, Kaidence Mills, and Keanon Ellette Mills; Great-Grandchildren, Zane and Gentry Troutner; one niece, Jody Green and husband Mike; and one nephew, Mike Richardson and wife Mitzi. Betty Jo was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Lou Richardson and her parents. Services will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gregg Theatre in Sedan with Holly and Steven Sutton officiating. Burial will follow at the Ozro Falls Cemetery, North of Hewins, Kansas. Following the burial, there will be a celebration of Betty Jo's life with a covered dish dinner at the Sedan Country Club. All friends and family are invited. No memorials were established but donations can be sent to the David W. Barnes Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses. Family and friends may call Friday, January 24, 2014 from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Sedan.
