Richard A. Medley, 72, of Coffeyville, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at his home.
He was born November 29, 1937 at Kansas City, Missouri to Walter and Opal (Clute) Medley. Richard grew up and attended school in Coffeyville, graduating from Field Kindley High School in 1955, and Coffeyville Community College in 1957. He received his bachelor degree from the University of Kansas and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Kansas Law School.
After completing law school Richard lived in Junction City, KS where he was in private practice and was the Geary County Assistant County Attorney. He later moved to Coffeyville where he went in to private practice and also served as Montgomery County Attorney. He served as District Judge from 1984 to 1995, when he returned to private practice. Richard also served as Police Judge in Coffeyville prior to retiring.
In 1977 he married Becky Kennedy at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in Coffeyville.
Richard was a member of the First Christian Church, Keystone Masonic Lodge, Kansas Bar Association, American Bar Association, and Sigma Nu Fraternity.
Richard and Becky enjoyed spending time at their home on Table Rock Lake where he loved to fish and spend time on the water. He was an excellent cook, an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Becky of the home; three sons, Scott P. Medley of Topeka, Brent A. Medley and wife LeAnne of Topeka, and R. Cordy Medley of Kansas City, KS; two daughters, Bonnie Long and husband Randy of Topeka, and Chazzie Medley of Chanute; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Memorial Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 21, 2010 in the First Christian Church with Rev. Ford Hall of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating.
Friends may sign the register book on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Coffeyville Community College Willard and Pat Walker Alumni Center, 10th and Willow.
The family suggests memorials to the Coffeyville Community College Foundation, Coffeyville Friends of Animals, or the First Christian Church; contributions may be left with the funeral home or mailed c/o David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
